Derwent Lightfast Coloured Pencil Art https://judithselcukillustrations2.webs.com/apps/photos/ Derwent Lightfast Coloured Pencil Art Oberon - King of the Fairies This artwork was created using Derwent Lightfast on Canson Mi Tientes pastel paper on the reverse side to utilise the gently textured surface of the paper that natural lends itself to these pencils. The pigment shows up well against the toned background. In the eye of the feathers I added Pebeo vitrail enamels to further highlight the reflective qualities of the 'eyes'. The botanical and yet scientific style leaves in the background contrasted with the vivid colourations in the peacock's plumage and was created using Derwent pro colour to achieve the clean lines and smooth edges required. https://judithselcukillustrations2.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=205945448 205945448 Close up of feathers This is a close up of the feathers to show the colouration of the plumage and the areas where I used Cerne relief in gold to draw in three dimensional fronds to the feathers to make them stand out even further. https://judithselcukillustrations2.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=205945449 205945449 Shells for the SAA Created as a tutorial for the SAA Paint magazine this smaller piece used just the first 36 Lightfast pencils released by Derwent. The pigments mix rather than blend on the surface of the paper creating vibrant transitions of colour and rich tonal values. https://judithselcukillustrations2.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=205945450 205945450 Using solvent to blend Lightfast pencils work really well with solvents such as Zest It and those suitable for use with oil paints such as Sansodor or Gamsol. Dip your brush into the solvent but then wipe off any excess fluid on a paper towel, it is the residue remaining on the bristles of the brush that blends the pencil by breaking down the binders and allowing the pigment to move across the surface. https://judithselcukillustrations2.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=205945453 205945453 The Illumination of Innocence The Illumination of Innocence is about creating a legacy from Lightfast pencils using light as a tool to give an object a sense of volume with contrasted light and shadow. The orchid is a symbol of beauty, elegance and innocence, purity and perfection. With Lightfast pencils the whites of the orchid come to life on this toned mixed media paper from Clairefontaine called Paint On Naturel. https://judithselcukillustrations2.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=205945451 205945451 Derwent Lightfast Advertorial Derwent Lightfast Advertorial in the Artist magazine October 2019 issue.
